Restoration and Conservation

Hassa Restorasyon ve Konservasyon

In today’s practice, it is very common, as if there was no alternative, to restore old buildings in a way that almost completely renews the structure and its appearance; ignores the historical meaning, architectural details and age of the building; treats it as a mere economic asset without spirit and meaning; ignores the personality of the work; erases the traces of time and historic quality of the material; disguising the building as something it is not. Until the 20th century, buildings used to be repaired, not restored. The artisan and the architect regarded the entrusted building as works that need to be relearned, read and accordingly corrected. In our past, there were no restorers, there were repairers (meremmetci).

The fundamental principle of our restoration and conservation works is to stay loyal to original design in terms of both layout plan and existing details without losing the meaning time has added to the material. We believe that isolating historical works from their original looks, and confining them to new and foreign looks is not the correct approach to restoration.

Being aware that each project comes with its own peculiar challenges, we carefully progress our conservation programs in order to preserve the existing structure, and increase its life expectancy and prestige. We follow a comprehensive process which starts with the evaluation of the original design and existing status of the building whose historical identity needs to be preserved, and continues with wide-scale planning. With a view to produce the most effective and lasting solution for each project, we, on the one hand, balance the delicacy of design with technological innovation, and on the other hand, deliver these services by using services of craftsmen and artisans with whom we have worked for long years.
